Landscape Design Projects – Planning Ahead

  • List everything you would like to accomplish through your landscaping project (create privacy, improve drainage, etc.).
  • Make a timeline for when you’d like to have different phases of the landscape completed.
  • Think about your needs. Ask yourself how much time you spend outside playing, doing yard work, etc.
  • Prioritize the areas of your landscape and the tasks you want to accomplish. Break your project down into stages. Remember to install hardscapes before plant material.
  • Know your site conditions such as light, slope, soil type and moisture. Correct any drainage and erosion problems and address any other site issues .
  • Don’t get bogged down with details. Don’t decide what color patio furniture you want before you even know where the patio will be.
  • Dream big and scale back if you have to. In the end, you’ll find ways to create the “wow” factor you’re looking for.
  • Invest in a consultation with a professional to evaluate the specifics of your yard and any existing landscape assets.
  • When hiring a landscape architect or designer, make sure you understand his or her process and the design-fee structure, including preliminary design, budgeting, final design and implementation. Hire based on qualifications and reputation, not cost.
